What is a Sender ID and why do you need one?
A Sender ID is the name that appears as the sender on a recipient's phone instead of a phone number. When a parent receives an SMS from "MYSCHOOL" instead of from "+256712345678", they immediately know who it's from, trust it more, and are 3x more likely to read it.
If you send bulk SMS in Uganda — whether as a school, SACCO, church, business, or developer — a custom sender ID is one of the highest-ROI upgrades you can make.
How sender IDs work in Uganda
Uganda's two main mobile networks (MTN and Airtel) each have their own sender ID registration system. Each network charges separately for branded sender IDs, and each takes 3–10 working days to register.
Key facts:
- Sender IDs must be 3–11 characters, letters and numbers only, no spaces or symbols
- Sender IDs are locked to your business once registered — no one else can use them
- Sender IDs work for both promotional and transactional SMS
- You can have different sender IDs for different products or departments (e.g.YOOLASMS, MYBANK, MYBANKOTP)

- Best value for businesses serving customers on both networks
Why is MTN monthly but Airtel one-time?
This is a frequent question. The simple answer: MTN Uganda charges telecom aggregators (like us) a recurring monthly platform fee for each registered sender ID. Airtel uses a different commercial model that bills mostly upfront with a one-time integration fee. We pass these structures through honestly — we don't arbitrage them.
How long does setup actually take?
Network-published timelines are 3–10 working days. In practice:
- MTN Uganda — usually 3–5 working days if your business documentation is complete
- Airtel Uganda — usually 5–7 working days; longer if your sender ID has uppercase letters that look like trademarks
- Both — plan 10 working days from payment to activation
What documents do you need?
To register a sender ID through Yoola SMS, we need:
- A short description of how you'll use the sender ID (e.g. "sending fee reminders to parents at St. Mary's School")
- A copy of your business registration certificate or trading license
- A sample message that the sender ID will send
- The setup fee (UGX 100,000) and the network fee paid
If you're an individual without a registered business, you can still get a sender ID, but the network may ask for additional verification.
How to choose a good sender ID name
Keep these rules in mind:
- Recognizable — use your actual business name or a clear abbreviation. "STMARYS" is better than "SMS123"
- Short — sender IDs are limited to 11 characters. Shorter names are also easier for recipients to remember
- No symbols or spaces — only letters (A-Z) and digits (0-9). "ST.MARYS" won't work
- Avoid generic words — "SMS", "INFO", "ALERT" are too generic and may be rejected or already taken
- Avoid bank/financial terms unless you're licensed — words like "MOMO", "PESA", "BANK" may be blocked unless you're regulated

The ROI of a Sender ID
A sender ID costs UGX 350,000 setup for a single network. Is it worth it?
Industry research consistently shows:
- Open rates: Branded SMS gets 95%+ read within 3 minutes vs ~70% for numeric senders
- Trust: Recipients are 4x less likely to think a branded SMS is spam
- Response rates: Branded promotional SMS gets 30–50% better response than unbranded
- Brand recall: After 30 days, recipients remember the brand sender 7x better than a phone number
For a school sending 5,000 fee reminders per term, the difference between branded and unbranded SMS can mean 40–60 more parents responding on time. That alone covers the sender ID cost many times over.
