The UGX 15/SMS marketing trap
Search "cheapest bulk SMS Uganda" and you'll see flashy claims: "UGX 15 per SMS!", "From UGX 12!", "Pay only 10 shillings!"
Here's the truth most providers won't tell you: those headline rates almost never apply to normal businesses. They're reserved for resellers buying 100,000+ SMS at a time, with strict contracts and big upfront payments.
Today we're going to do the math honestly — what does bulk SMS in Uganda actually cost when you read the fine print?
What real Ugandan businesses actually pay
From verified pricing across providers in 2026:
If you send under 1,000 SMS/month
Real rate: UGX 30–50 per SMS. Anyone advertising lower than that for this volume is either misleading you or hiding fees. Yoola SMS charges UGX 35/SMS in this tier.
If you send 1,000 to 10,000 SMS/month
Real rate: UGX 25–35 per SMS. This is where most schools, churches, and SMEs sit. Yoola SMS is UGX 30/SMS in this tier — among the lowest in Uganda for honest providers.
If you send 10,000 to 60,000 SMS/month
Real rate: UGX 20–28 per SMS. SACCOs, banks, and large schools fit here. Yoola SMS is UGX 25/SMS.
If you send 60,000+ SMS/month
Real rate: UGX 18–25 per SMS. Yoola SMS is UGX 20/SMS. Below UGX 18 is reseller territory — and resellers typically need to commit to monthly minimums of 200,000+ SMS.
The 5 hidden costs that turn cheap into expensive
1. Setup and account fees
Some providers charge UGX 50,000–200,000 just to activate your account. Yoola SMS charges zero setup fees.
2. Credit expiry
"Use it or lose it" pricing means credits bought today vanish if you don't send them in 30/60/90 days. Yoola SMS credits never expire.
3. Monthly platform fees
A few providers charge UGX 50,000–100,000/month just for having an account, in addition to per-SMS charges. Always ask: is there a monthly platform fee?
4. Failed SMS charges
Some providers bill you for failed deliveries — messages that never reached the recipient. Yoola SMS doesn't charge for failed SMS.
5. Sender ID fees
Branded sender IDs add UGX 100,000–500,000/month on top of per-SMS rates. If you need a branded sender ID (most businesses do), include this in your real cost calculation.
The real cheapest provider in Uganda — by use case
Cheapest for small senders (under 1,000/month)
At this volume, all providers are within ±UGX 10 of each other. Pick whichever has the smoothest signup. We recommend Yoola SMS for the free 3-SMS trial and instant Mobile Money top-up.
Cheapest for medium senders (1,000–10,000/month)
Yoola SMS at UGX 30/SMS is among the lowest transparent rates in Uganda for this tier.
Cheapest for high-volume senders (60,000+)
Yoola SMS at UGX 20/SMS is competitive. BulkSMSUG claims UGX 15 but the volume threshold isn't clearly published. Always demand a written quote with the volume threshold spelled out.
Cheapest for resellers
If you're reselling SMS to your own customers, contact Yoola SMS for reseller pricing — we offer custom rates below UGX 20/SMS for committed monthly volumes.
What "cheap" really means in SMS
Beyond price, factor in:
- Delivery rate — a UGX 15 SMS that doesn't deliver costs you more than a UGX 25 SMS that does
- Speed — for OTPs and time-sensitive messages, "cheap and slow" can lose customers
- Support — when something breaks, a cheaper provider with bad support costs you hours of lost time
- Payment flexibility — if you can't pay with Mobile Money, you're forced into bank transfers (slow) or Visa cards (FX fees)
Our honest pitch
We're not the absolute cheapest if you only look at the per-SMS rate at huge volumes. But we're likely the cheapest real total cost for most Ugandan businesses, because:
- No setup fees
- No monthly platform fees
- No credit expiry
- No charge for failed SMS
- Mobile Money top-up (no Visa or bank transfer hassle)
- Pricing is published openly on our website
